JOE & BARBARA HUNSAKER

Joe and Barbara met in 1983 while Joe was completing an internship to become ordained as a pastor. Barbara was working as a special education teacher and they both shared their love for serving the Lord. Their two children were born in the early 1990s and went to Elementary and Junior High at a Christian school where Barbara was the principal. After working as a pastor and counselor, Joe finished his career teaching High School. Life was centered around faith, family, and education. On his 28th birthday, their oldest son disclosed he was a woman in a man’s body. This began their journey of blending their deep Christian faith with the reality of being parents of a transgender child. Joe recently retired and Barbara is the Director of Special Education at a large K-12 Christian school in the Phoenix metro area. They continue to have a healthy, growing relationship with both their children.
